I was once a proud product junkie. You know you are a product junkie when both of your bathroom cabinets are full of products and you sneak in that extra curl definer before anyone gets home. I would buy whatever product was hot for the moment. I started with Miss Jessie’s in 2008. The search for the perfect product included Oyin, Uncle Funky’s Daughter, Curls, Karen’s Body Beautiful and many more brands.
Come, shop and have your photo taken!

15 years ago I started kroeshaar.com (the Dutch version of going-natural.com/) just before I was about to debut with ‘Kroeshaar, wat je moet weten en meer’, the very first book about natural hair in Dutch. Natural hair was way more controversial back then. I think it was even considered a taboo so I didn’t really know how people would respond to my natural hair care book.

Sisters Uptown Bookstore and Cultural Center
On Saturday June 10th, I had a book talk about Bad Hair Uprooted, the Untold History of Black Follicles at Sisters Uptown bookstore in Harlem. That colorful vibrant place where delicious healthy smoothies are also available, must be the coziest bookstore in the city. This beautiful space envisioned and owned by Miss Janifer Wilson that opened up in 2000 has been serving as a community center since June 2007.
Welcomed by the owner herself, a warm personality complimented with thick fabulous natural hair strands, made me feel at home instantly.
With over 100 RSVP’s and a couple of people who had called the bookstore to be on the waiting list, I was a little nervous that the space would be too small but even that single worry faded away. Not everybody showed up so there was room enough and it turned out to be a great gathering and book talk.
Friends from my home country Suriname; Sherida, Edmond and Sieglien. You can order the book at https://fromusbyus.com/books
Besides a few friends who came to support me, I found myself to be in front of a whole new audience. A showing of hands told me they weren’t familiar with going-natural.com at all. So as usual I introduced myself but this time I really started at the very beginning of my journey of when I went natural and why because ultimately that is what brought me there.
Not sure if all of you remember but I went natural because my hair was breaking severely at a time when I was living in Amsterdam the Netherlands with no information about natural hair at all.
As desperate as I was back then, when I look back now I see my hair breakage as a blessing. It was not just my hair but the universe slowly but surely swayed me to change course.
When I got to my first book Going-Natural started to ring a bell as one of the guests had bought the book back in the day, read it and even tried some of the styles. She tried the twist out among others but her favorite one was the flat twists because that lasted longer. It never fails to be a wonderful experience to hear a reader talk about how your book helped them.
Bookstore owner Janifer Wilson and Dervie buying Bad Hair Uprooted, the Untold History of Black Follicles.
The Going Natural Hair products were also a hit. Not only did Miss Janifer herself bought some, she will also carry them in her store. So from now on Harlem people, you don’t have to travel to Brooklyn anymore if you don’t want to order online, you can get the Going Natural hair Care products at Sister’s Uptown Bookstore.
Unfortunately I couldn’t catch all people on tape nor on camera but I still feel grateful, humbled and happy. If you want to hear the full story of why Black Follicles Matter, check the Going Natural Events Page. More book talks and a hair show are coming up!

Thirty- two years after the first ever dreadlocks grooming salon opened its doors and natural hair has become an inevitable lifestyle, the booming movement established its own hair and fashion show.Going-Natural.com, instrumental in propelling the online natural hair movement for over a decade and the International African Arts Festival, a cultural beacon of New York for 46 years, have been teaming up, to give the natural hair movement the stage it so deserves.
Last year’s natural hair show ‘Back to the Future of Our Roots’ set the stage for natural hairstylists and models to emerge to limitless heights with the goal to take the now billion dollar industry to the next level of professionalism and acceptance.
With this year’s theme Black Follicles Matter, Drs. Mireille Liong, producer and founder of Going-Natural.com aims to highlight the social injustices that people with African strands, still have to endure.
Black people are the only people on planet earth who don’t have the fundamental human right to wear their God-given tresses natural, says Liong.
Styles that are natural to African strands are considered radical and improper for the workplace which is detrimental to Black follicles.
73% of Black women are suffering from relaxer-induced alopecia, hair loss related to chemical straighteners. Instead of hiding the pain and shame behind wigs and weaves, we need to talk, address and solve the underlying issues.
The goal of the Going Natural Hair Show is to expose the unmatched versatility and beauty of Black Follicles while creating awareness and breaking stereotypes.
The next Going Natural Hair show will be on July 4th at the African Festival at Commodore Barry Park in Brooklyn, NY.
If you are a hairstylist who wants to participate, please contact us at info@going-natural.com.

Acts of discrimination in the workplace are often kept quiet, and for many people, they often won’t believe someone’s rehashing of an event unless they were there themselves. Why? Because we often think that workplace discrimination, especially with regard to race or ethnicity, is a thing of the past. Facebook user Tabitha Willemsen (aka Gaia Skye on Facebook) posted a recent encounter with her employer in a hair and fashion store in Lichtaart, Belgium. Ms. Willemsen worked at the store a few hours a week through a temp agency.
