Why did you become a model and what is your goal as a model?
I became a model because I had this passion to be like (or be better than) those that I would watch on the style channel when they use to showcase the runway shows late at night. I wanted to be the model of the moment. My goals are to break every taboo barrier in the modeling industry from the race barrier to the roles that male models play. I want to be well known and then use that status towards great philanthropic ideas.
How important is your hair as a model? Why do you choose to wear your hair the way you do?
I felt that Hair is very important. It is an extension of the model’s personality. The hair can give a model that necessary edge that one may need to make a runway show or photo greater than the rest. I choose to wear my hair in the fashion that it is in because not only does my natural afro causes positive reactions but it gives versatility. If one wants to straighten my hair or keep it in the style it is, that option is available.
What does your hair mean to you? Is it just an accessory that compliments your personality and style or is it deeper than that?
My hair sometimes goes beyond just a style. I do not like to conform to societies idea of how a black (wo)man should or should not wear His(her) hair. My hair does not and should not define my work ethic or my personality. A woman’s hair is not that important to myself however I would prefer a natural head of hair as opposed to those who relax/perm it. I understand the need of a perm and I can understand that most black women have been using this process for ages and have started it since they were very young. However the perm/relaxer is very damaging to the hair and after years of doing so it causes baldness and the hair becomes harder to grow. Besides this effect I have no problem what you as a woman do with your hair because at the end of the day YOU have to wear it.
Is the texture of a woman’s hair important to you?And length?
THE TEXTURE is also not important as well as the length. People (in my opinion) who think differently to this are usually the cause to why our society reacts the way it does to hair currently.
Do you think black hair is an issue? Why or why not?
Black hair to other people can be an issue. To us as black folks we may feel like we want to just be accepted for our hair texture and length so we fight against our natural growth and that is an issue. It is also an issue for other nationalities because when styling hair most do not know how to style it which then causes black models not to be selected for various shows. Also others may feel that it is very different from the fine texture of hair that most are accustomed to and to not think outside of the box causes a rift (one of many) between races.
Last Words:
Thank you for having me, as a model and a activist my job is to destroy self-hatred not just black people in America but all over the world.
