Alfredia Moorer Challenge 8 - Hats off for Miss NP 2011!, America's Next Natural Model challenge, ebony, clark 0
My updo was inspired by the essence of who I am…not much fuss, nor too extravagant… Simple, yet complex in nature. I love styles that represent me. I usually just go with the flow and that is how I chose to do this style. I stood in front of the mirror—without a plan— and let my fingers work. Also I try to choose styles that don’t require much manipulation, as it can cause breakage.

First I co-washed my hair with One ‘N’ Only Argan Oil Moisture Repair Conditioner, then applied Going-Natural’s No More Knots detangler for the detangling process (which now includes the Tangle Teezer!!!!!). Afterward I saturated my hair with Going-Natural’s Silky Shea Hair Butter, added 6-8 chunky twists, and let my hair air dry for two days. Then I proceeded to release each twist carefully, and gently combed each one with a with detangling/wide tooth comb. Although it can be quite taboo to comb dry hair, the silky shea makes your hair feel very silky once it’s dry.
Finally, I carefully parted my hair in two sections: Point A starts over one eyebrow then curves toward the center of my head and ends at the nape. The objective is to have all the flat twists directed toward the part in the center. I made my parts for flat twisting each about 3/4″ to 1″ thick. I flat twisted each section toward the center part all the way down to the ends. Being that this is a mohawk-like style, there a few directions to take toward additional styling upon completion. Once finished, I took the dangling twists and braided them in an inverted french braid from the nape up only half way. The rest of the hair was loosely piled on top of my head and secured with hairpins.
I definitely feel like this style represents Miss Nappturality because like Miss Nappturality, this style is graceful and multi-faceted. There are many dimensions, so it can be styled several ways. That’s how most individuals are. Today you could be reserved, tomorrow you might feel fun and foxy, and the day after you could be ultra classy chic. To me that’s what being America’s Next Natural Model means. No individual is one dimensional. As long as you represent who you are with love and respect and in the most beautiful manner, (no matter which side you feel like exposing and no matter what the masses have to say about it) you are being true to yourself…and that is nourishment for the soul. That is Miss Nappturality and that is me.
Peace and Love.
