The video of the song “Bullet” from the music group Koyeba sparked a buzz the minute it was posted then probably received the most views any artist from the small nation Suriname ever received in such little time.
The local LGBT community immediately condemned the song releasing a press statement that the song promotes hatred and violence against gays and should be pulled. Since then local stations banned the song but it is still on youtube attracting more and more traffic, views and even likes.
Otnil Babel, one of the artists in the video who is also member of the youth parliament in Suriname, explained that ‘Bullet gi den batti man’is a loud and clear message to today’s youth to stay clear from prostitution. According to him youngsters only listens to harsh words. Remarkably he says the song condemns the fact that gay prostitutes are only after material things but the video like many rap videos, seems to idealize materialism.
People who can’t understand the lyrics may just see a few talented kids who are trying hard to make it in music. The truth is that these kids are talented with quite a following which makes it even more painful that this is the way they choose to send a message.
Understanding the words can only leave one with a repulsive feeling of disgust. Calling to bust someone’s face open and degrading homosexuality to the point that they deserve a bullet is violent and promotes hate, there is no way you can spin that.
