One thing I have enjoyed the most about being a finalist in “The Next Natural Model” is being able to experience different things. This challenge was very interesting because I had the opportunity to learn about a community of people that were brave and courageous and reminded me of our American Harriet Tubman. The Maroons are the descendants of runaway slaves who escaped into the interior rain forests immediately upon their arrival in the English, later Dutch colony. I admire them because of their strength, pride and defiance. That is still evident in their culture today.
I AM Top Model
For this Challenge, I had to come at it with the mindset that I was already a Top Model! I was given a job to model both a beautiful beaded necklace and a fresh flower hat. As the model, the first thing I ask myself was “How could I show these accessories to the consumer and represent the company’s product well?”. I also had to look at it from the buyer’s view point and ask myself “What would make me look at these items and want to buy and wear them?” I know that when I look in magazines and at models, I am looking at everything from the hair, make up and clothing.
A Day To Love
For this Challenge, we were told to talk about a Romantic Style for Valentines and Natural Brides. Valentine’s Day to me means showing the people or that special person in your life that you love and appreciate them! I feel this should be done every day, but Valentine’s Day is just that one day out of the year to pay extra special recognition to the ones you love and to show a little love to yourself! When i hear the word “Valentine”, I think of my husband and I think of my kids!
For Challenge 5, I had the pleasure of trying out products from the Hair Care line Kynx! What I love about this company’s products are that they contain natural ingredients and are specially formulated to care for Natural textures so that we can truly ROCK our hair in any form!
The products also contain Monoi de Tahiti oil which is proven to help soften, moisturize, strengthen, give great shine to and reconstruct dry hair. I used them to create a big, fluffy side puff that was amazingly soft and full of bounce! Each product has a “personality” and my job this challenge was to choose one of the muses to portray!
A Walk on the Wild Side!
When we were given this challenge, I really had to do some thinking because I wanted to create a look that would make any woman feel like they could be a Super Model or Cover Girl. I wanted to approach it in a way that would not come off looking too difficult, yet still look like you took time on it.
I feel every woman deserves to feel good about herself, especially in a society that puts extra emphasis on having the perfect body, having long straight hair or the perfect skin. I wanted to create a look that a woman could do and look in the mirror and say “I am Sexy, I am Beautiful and most of all I am ME!”!
Your hair can become easier to manage and look beautiful without much effort at all! That is why picking the best products are so important for gorgeous AND healthy hair. Here are the steps I took to achieve this wonderful Twist Out look.
1. First you want to start with a clean slate by removing all product build up and toxins from your hair. I co-washed with Going Natural’s “Detox Conditioner”.
2. After rinsing, I squeezed out the water and applied “No More Knots” Detangler to my hair, let it sit for a few seconds to soften the hair, separate hair into four sections and then use a wide tooth comb to gently detangle from the ends up.
3. After detangling, I divided my hair into sections, applied the “Curly Twist Out Hair Milk” and combed it through. I then two strand twisted each section until all of my hair was complete! Last, but not least, I let my hair air dry.
4. Finally after my hair was completely dry, I carefully took my twists apart and separated them until my hair grew big and full. I used the “Herbal Styling Gel” to help tame my edges and enhance the curls around my hairline.
And that’s that, Picture Perfect hair… even in the water!! Mahalo 🙂
For this challenge, i wanted to talk about Martin Luther King Jr., and what his life meant to me. To me, he represented so much more than a dream for equality and a call for brotherhood. He represented freedom and taught us that there were no limitations under God. He tried to teach us that it didn’t matter the color of our skin or our background, we are one in the same. He stood up for what he believed in and wasn’t afraid to speak his mind or encourage people of all nationalities to embrace each other.
I got my first relaxer at the age of 13. Prior to that, my hair was completely natural and it was long and thick. I wanted to be like my peers and would envy the things that their hair could do. Back then, i didn’t realize my hair’s potential. Relaxers became a ritual for me, every time i would see a wave i would smother it with the “creamy crack”. I used curling irons, flat irons and spritzes that would make my hair stand at attention in a hurricane! I thought my hair looked good…it might have, but i was severely damaging it with every appliance and chemical i used.
