The Women of Color Conference is an annual Brooklyn College event that opens a dialog on social issues important to Black women. Experts are invited to discuss topics like media representation and self esteem with the goal to help graduating students get a deeper understanding of the issues at hand and to send a positive message. This year’s topic is natural hair themed “Weaving Through the Kinks.”
The very first public screening of the Going-Natural Video Diaries, a documentary that captures the heartbeat of the natural hair movement, will take place at the Warehouse Gallery & Studio in Redhook, Brooklyn on August 9 at 2:00 pm.

The Going Natural Video Diaries is an ongoing youtube documentary series that pictures the rapidly growing natural hair movement while it’s unfolding. The goal is to capture how we are connected at the roots: what drives us, how/where we relate and what the journey of going natural teaches us.

With so many Youtube channels, blogs, documentaries and hair care businesses on the rise, the renaissance of natural hair is undeniable. In a society where straight hair has been the dominating norm for centuries, even in the Black community, it’s interesting to find out what drives this natural hair movement.
