Philomena Kwao – Britain’s First, Black, Plus-size Model

Natural beauty

An excellent testimony to the fact that curves are beautiful on a woman, Philomena Kwao is a 22 year old student who has always excelled academically. She, however, did not stop there. When Excel-Models1 and Cosmopolitan began their quest for a curvy and beautiful woman, Philomena decided to give it a shot. This young model is no fresher to the fashion industry, for she had already turned heads by bagging the title of Miss Ghana UK in the year 2008.

This sprightly young woman, who accepts and flaunts her beautiful size 16 frame, has had an exciting journey after winning the title of Britain’s first, black, plus-size model. She has been on several fashion features, and even earned a part in Cosmopolitan Magazine’s beach-inspired shoot.

While curves were once considered attractive, over the years, the industry’s attitude took a different turn, and skinner models began to gain the spotlight. Consequently, several girls and women across the world began to aspire for bodies as small as a size zero or size two, and some went as far as starving themselves to get that figure. In light of such issues, Philomena admitted that she wanted to be a figurehead for young girls who sometimes get disillusioned by the glamorous lifestyle.
In her own, confident words – “I want to show them that you can really do it all if you try; that is to pursue your dreams, whatever they maybe and get an education. Your education doesn’t have to suffer! I also want to help spread the message that there is beauty in everything: every shape, colour, size, and height… whatever. We are all beautiful”
