If you get a chance, go see the exhibit Bad Hair Uprooted if only to get a closer look and see how endlessly fascinating these strings of matted natural hair really are. The way African strands coil and bend around each other in growing strings, also known as dreadlocks, is just magical.
Beyond celebrating natural hair, this exhibition suitably named Bad Hair Uprooted, truly serves its purpose by picturing a remarkable beauty that improves one’s perception of African hairstyles. As this portrait shows contrary to general believe natural hair can grow, long, very long.
The exhibition is not just about dreadlocks though. All kinds of natural hairstyles are featured. From cornrows to twists, from bantus to Afros literally portraying the versatility of African coils defying another notion that African hairstyling is limited. Each colorful portrait tells a story with an underlying message that shows us something new about natural hair and Black beauty.
