In a most insightful video Clinical Psychologist Miss Gillian Scott shares her hair story. Inspired by the people she is working with, the beautiful short haired natural was driven to lead a more authentic life and went natural. However, getting her first relaxer at the age of 9, the most difficult part of her natural journey is emotionally. As a person who usually takes action she is still trying to figure out why she waited so long to go natural as Gillian was toying with the idea for over 10 years.
What immediately spoke to me is the fact that Gillian mentions that she didn’t have a model. She didn’t know about alternatives so she didn’t know it wasn’t normal to relax her hair.
When I was relaxing, I also felt that I had no other option because there were no examples at all. I also thought it was normal to straighten our hair. In fact my motivation for starting taking pictures and creating the exhibition The Pursuit of Nappiness> was to share different examples with the world sSo we definitely connect on this level.
What I find most interesting about Gillian’s story though, is the question that she herself asks: What is so different about going natural that we are hesitant and keeps us from doing it? Can you relate to this? Is it also emotional for you? Once you thought about it, how long did it actually take you take the steps and go natural?
