An overview of happenings, gatherings and events in the Natural Hair World in 2013; highlights, hairstyles and more.
Meetups are hot. With more than 200 natural hair meetup groups all over the country quite a few natural heads make use of the opportunities that meetup.com offers; they create groups to organize gatherings around the topic of Black hair. Cutie Demure with almost 2.000 members is one of the largest in New York. After we met a few times, I decided to sponsor a meeting and check it out.
Invited by the wonderful Candace Kelley, Going Natural was invited to do a workshop at the Let your Hair Down event on Saturday, September 14. Although I’ve heard good things I was never able to make it to one of these events. So I was exited that my agenda allowed it this time to give a Going Natural Workshop in the city.
The Master Pioneer Award was the idea of Miss Anita Hill Moses, an expert hairstylist who served the Natural Hair Care industry for more than 20 years. Her drive was to honor, celebrate and elevate the trailblazers of the natural hair world who were instrumental in developing an industry that hardly existed to one that is flourishing right now.

I had an AMAZING time in Amsterdam. One look at the colorful Keti Koti Album and one might wonder why I would even consider coming back. Well I might have stayed longer if I didn’t have the best reason to come back: The first Going-Natural Hair Show!
Yes, I had the honor to open the brand new stage at the International African Arts Festival with my own show featuring New York Finest Hairstylists. This was a doubly honor as it gave me a chance to personally praise natural hairstylists and you will see the photos and video soon.
We still need a few models for the upcoming hair show. It doesn’t matter if your hair is long, short loced or not, as long as it’s nappy and you are happy. Please register, create a profile, upload a few images and email us the link to your profile.
Two First Ladies proudly making Natural look sophisticated; Liesbeth Vanenburg-Venetiaan from Suriname and Denise Bucumi Nkurunziza, First Lady from Burundi.
This week I’ve had the honor of representing Suriname at the business forum of Voices of African Mothers at the UN. VAM is an NGO that offers women educational opportunities to attain economic empowerment and become decision-making leaders in the countries of Africa.
