Bonnets for Dreads : If you have locs, more than likely you feel the need to protect your hair at night by wearing a satin lined hair bonnet, silk scarf, or some other form of hair protection. The reason being is to protect your locs from lint, frizz, and dryness – all things locs are prone to having. Some swear by the benefits of wearing a bonnet over their locs at night, while others don’t. So does wearing a bonnet protect your hair at night? There was a discussion about this in a Facebook loc group called Braidlocs, Sisterlocks, Microlocs, Interlocs & More! and below are some of the benefits of wearing a hair bonnet at night many have cited.
Protects Your Locs From Lint
Locked hair is a magnet for lint. Locs can get lint from your clothes (sweaters, scarves, any cotton material), fabric covered furniture, car seats, knitted winter hats, blankets, and cotton sheets and pillow cases. The list goes on and on. Once lint gets into your locs it’s very hard to get out. Not only is lint in your locs unsightly, but it can cause you problems down the road. So the best thing you can do is be diligent about avoiding getting lint in your locs. Wearing a bonnet at night can help protect your locs from lint while sleeping.
Keeps Your Locs From Being Frizzy
Depending on your hair type (soft, fine hair) and the size of your locs (big, small, medium or micro) frizzy locs can be hard to avoid. There are those who prefer to have neat looking locs, which means they will take extra precautions to avoid having frizzy locs. When you sleep at night, just laying on a pillow will cause friction, especially if your pillowcase is made of cotton. If you toss and turn or reposition your head throughout the night, that friction will cause your locs to frizz. Wearing a bonnet to bed at night will protect your locs from friction that leads to frizz.
Protects Your Locs From Dryness And Maintains Moisture
The longer your locs are, the more likely they will be dry. This is because longer locs are constantly rubbing against your clothes and other fabrics. This takes away much needed moisture from your locs. Also, if you use heat on your locs like sitting under the dryer after a retwist or if you blow dry your hair after washing, that heat dries out your locs. Coloring your locs will cause dryness as well, and this goes for short, medium or long locs. Wearing a bonnet at night helps keep the much-needed moisture in your locs, whereas sleeping on cotton pillowcases and sheets takes the moisture out. The Cons of Wearing Hair Bonnets
Not everyone agrees that hair bonnets are the answer to protecting your locs at night. Many have pointed out that the elastic on hair bonnets tend to rub on their edges or are too tight on their edges which causes breakage or hair loss. Others feel hair bonnets are too hot to wear over their locs at night and instead use silk or satin pillowcases so they don’t have to put anything over their hair at all. Quite a few cited menopause and night sweats for not being able to wear a bonnet over their locs at night. There are many who simply feel tying up their locs with a silk scarf at night will protect their hair just as good as wearing a bonnet. And still, there are those who wear both a silk scarf and a bonnet together for extra protection for their locs.( dreadlocks sleeping cap / satin cap for locs /satin bonnet for dreads / satin scarf for locs / bonnets for dreads / satin bonnet for locs / scarf for locs / dreadlock bonnet / how to wrap locs at night )
Either way I think we all can agree that some measure should be taken to protect your locs at night. How you protect your locs and what method you choose to use is up to you and should be based on your needs.
