To be honest, I’ve always known better than to sleep on cotton, but still I did. The rationale behind sleeping on satin made so much sense, but still I never bothered. I was intrigued by this second challenge. I wanted to see if I’d truly feel a difference. Of course, I knew the health of my hair during my going-natural journey would be the ultimate test. That I would have to wait for.
Being that challenge 2 was actually the first real challenge, I have to admit that it caused me to be a little anxious. The pillow case hadn’t arrived, but I knew it would be there on my porch waiting for me soon enough. So I began to try to come up with ideas and ways to bring a little creativity to my presentation. Nothing really came to me.
The next morning I peeked outside and there it was. I was so excited. Couldn’t wait to open my little brown box of goodies. The satin pillow case was on top!
I removed the plastic wrapper and unfolded the pillow case. It felt cool and light against my fingers. I walked into the laundry room, closed my eyes, covered my face with it as I blocked out all other senses. I wanted to really concentrate on the way it felt against my skin, my face, my head. The ideas came pouring. Now to capture this on film was going to be a challenge of it’s own.
But the feeling i got, it was nostalgic, to say the least.
As I smiled into the pillow case, I was reminded of when I was a child, getting into bed on a warm summer’s night, when the only air conditioner we had was the chill of the night air through an open window, if we were lucky. On the hottest nights, I’d pray for sleep to hurry up and come get me, so I wouldn’t have to suffer any longer through the muggy, Georgia heat. But there were a few rare occasions when I’d get into bed, and the sheets and pillows would be so cool and so calming. And I’d find myself smiling to myself in the darkness, for no one else to see, as I drifted off to sleep.
Next I ironed out the wrinkles and put the case on my favorite sleeping pillow. I had to try it. No need to wait for nighttime! I got in bed and when I laid my head on that pillow…oh my, what a difference! No sticking. No snagging. No crackles. It felt like heaven. As my head glided across the pillow, I knew that I would never go back to regular, cotton pillow cases again.
And my son, he’s taken to this satin treasure as well. Every night we argue over who gets the pink, “saddin” pillow, as he calls it. And since he’s going natural with mommy, guess I’ll have to get him one too.
