For the first time in the history of Holland, Amsterdam had a Natural Hair Day and the honor to organize this event fell on me. The experience couldn’t have been better.
When the doors opened at 11 am on Saturday May 1st there were allready people lined up. While entering attending visitors could enjoy the slideshow of the pursuit of nappiness showing the most inspiring hairstyles, not just from the US, but also from Suriname and Holland.
After the official opening Sisterlocks concultant Charlene Dick started the day with a lecture about Sisterlocks. Thanks to other Sisterlocks consultants and their clients the audience could have a good understanding of these locks and they loved them.
Another absolutely unbelievable first was the wildly acclaimed comedian Jorgen Raymann who brought his most popular tv persona to the Natural Hair Day: Aunt Es. Well aware of the troubles that threaten African hair, she gave the audience a chance to laugh at themselves. You know how funny we can be when it comes to our hair.
After a break, it was time for my lecture which was about Black Hair and society: Where we stand now, how we got here and where we should think of going with our strands. This lecture was also perceived very well as was the movie Good Hair afterwards.
The highlight of the day was the Hair Show. Models from the Dutch natural hair website kroeshaar.com were showing off their styles together with models from the two leading natural hairstylists in the Netherlands Raoul and Anoeska. While the models of HNKM had the chance to introduce themselves to the audience and explain why they think they are Holland’s Next Natural Model, Raoul and Anoeska had put on a complete performance show that made the audience joyfully clap till the end.
Needless to say the evening ended on a high note. Visitors came up to me saying that they never saw a show like this and that it needed to be repeated. This was music to my ears and it makes me think that we’re on the right track.
