His style is Avant Garde, his motto is kill them with kindness it works” and his salon is in Baltimore.
What is your earliest memory of doing hair?
About 11 years ago. Practising on friends & family, locals in Baltimore.
How, why and when did you get into natural hairstyling?
I fell into it because I was taking care of my mother who was ill and needed me to take care for her.
What is so special about natural, nappy, kinky hair?
It’s grows alot faster it has more elasticity and holds styles a lot better. It is low maintenance and it individualizes each person’s personal style.
Natural hair seems quite hip right now. Locs are everywhere, it looks like the afro is back. Do you think it’s just a fashion phase? That this will pass just like the afro in the 60’s and as soon as the fashion is over we will all go back and straighten our hair again or do we really begin to embrace our natural hair?
Initially people think it is a cool style but once they start wearing their natural coif they appreciate that it is a lifestyle change, regards to their clothing and what they put in their body their life changes, it is also a spiritual change everyone must try.
Did you ever relax your hair? If yes, what made you decide to stop? If no, why not?
I am bald so after cutting off my locs (which I grew and cut 3 times) I did not do that. As a guy I was raised that men did not relax their hair
I know the service industry is quite demanding. There are some nasty customers out there. So can you give us a few behavior tips and describe your ideal customer?
My ideal customer is friendly and enthusiastic about detailed styling. One that is not afraid to experiment with their natural hair. Nasty clients is not something I am unaccustomed to. In my 11 years I have had only about 2 bad clients, but my personal motto is “kill them with kindness it works”
What is your signature style?
If you could give any celebrities a hair makeover who would it be, why and how would you style that person?
It would be Angela Bassett because she exudes femininty strength and is beautiful. I would first convinve her to go natural cut it low and have her wear stand up twists.
Can you name one or more highlights of your achievements up until now?
Opening up chicago’s premier natural hair salon. Successfully trained 38 people to go on and have successful natural hair styling careers.
So you celebrated the anniversary of your salon. What are your future plans? Where does hairstylist Christian go from here?
It is a long process but we are franchising and I will continue to teach natural hair care and eventually go abroad, and do more of the same.
And your motto is
Again: ” kill them with kindness it works”
