Going-Natural.com presents Black Follicles Matter, a unique collection of beautiful Natural Hairstyles that challenge the stereotypical ideas of Black Hair. The exhibition opens the first day of Black History Month on February 1st at 7 PM at the Temple of Illumination located at 138 St. James Place in Brooklyn, NY.
The colorful portraits of natural hairstyles are to highlight the consequences of the fact that Black people are the only people on planet earth who are denied the fundamental human right to wear their god-given tresses natural.
Straight hair is as extreme for African hair as dreadlocks are for European hair
Laws based on stereotypes deny Black people the right to wear styles like Dreadlocks, Afros and Cornrows. While these hairstyles are extreme for straight hair, they are perfectly natural and made for Black follicles.
The world doesn’t seem to know that straight hair is as extreme for African hair as dreadlocks are for European hair and it’s killing for Black follicles.
Current laws based on European hair make sense for the texture of European and even Asian hair but Black women suffer serious consequences.
A disproportional number of 73% of Black women suffer from relaxer induced alopecia, a hair loss condition related to chemical straighteners, despite the fact that they outspend every other ethnic group on hair care, 9 times.
The goal of the Black Follicles Matter exhibition is not just to highlight the injustice behind the unequal hair rights but also to change perceptions. A change of perception on Black hair is essential to uproot the stereotypical ideas on which the injustice unequal hair laws are based on. That is why Black Follicles Matter is shooting for justice aiming to change perceptions one headshot at the time.
