Before & After
African hair is uniquely versatile. Limited only by your own creativity, natural coils allow you to change up your look spectacularly without the need for a drastic hair cut or even color treatment. Here is an example. It’s an afro mo-hawk slash Rihanna do. What do you think?
Preperation
My hair shrinks a lot. It really shrinks an awful lot which is fine most of the time but if you want to do a fro-hawk you want maximum length and fullness.
So, I washed my hair not on the day of styling but one day before going to stylist Riqui. To make sure that the maximum shrinkage is over at the time my hair got styled, I put it in braids and let it dry over night.
Again, I gave my hair a luxury Hair and Scalp Detox Treatment before going to Riqui. This is one of my staples now. Not only does this Treatment detox my scalp and deep cleanse my strands, it also nourishes them with healthy earthy minerals that will make them feel like new!
The curvy fro-hawk
After washing, I used the Silky Shea Hair Butter to put my hair in a couple of twists. This wonderful butter keep my strands moisturized and protect the ends in winter time.
It took Riqui about 4 hours to complete this style. When I left the fro part was not out yet. The hair that is out in the pictures, the afro part, was first intrinsically parted, twisted and then rolled into a bantu knot.
Completing a style this way only increases versatility. Not everyone can show up with a fro-hawk at their job so it’s always good to include more options when you get such a different style like this. It keeps your options open and maximizes you to enjoy your style longer and in different ways. More about the different options next month.
To keep the hair from frizzing Riqui used the Herbal Styling Gel very generously. Not just on the hair . When she parted the hair she also added gel to my scalp.
Riqui is more than a master braider. She is a hair artist who designs art of one’s tresses.
Each side has it’s own pattern. So each side will give you a different view of the same hairstyle. This is just a style that will not only make people look but really will keep them wondering.
The curve – It’s not a straight fro-hawk, it’s curvy
like our coils like our bodies.
Style care
While Silky Shea Hair Butter the kept my strands moisturized, the Going Natural Herbal Styling Gel kept my hair from shrinking. At night I would either put the fro part in bantus or a ponytail. Then I would use the Scalp Conditioning Spray and cover it with a scarf. The next morning the braids would like like new. Depending on how the loose hair looked, I would create another style.
