My story is not as complaining as most girl who relaxed (permed) their hair at a young age as 2 years old. However I grew up with a discomfort with my natural hair. I always wanted to have long straight hair like my mom, sister, and people at my high school which contain a majority of caucasians and zero natural black women. When I was in 9th grade there were times when boys and girls would come up to me and say why don’t you straighten or perm your hair, this hurt me a lot. I went to my mom and ask her if I can please get a permed, but she never wanted me to get one. Eventually she gave in and I got my first perm in the summer 2006 after 9th grade.
I later decided four years after having permed hair that I want to go natural due to breakage and unhealthy hair. Seeing women who are natural, went natural, and that are still transitioning encouraged me to man up and make that resolution. I made the decision on May 2010 that I will start my transition, sadly I couldn’t handle it so I permed my hair once again in August 2010. Later regretting the recent perm, I made a permanent lifestyle choice that this will be my last perm. Now we are in December 2010 and its been four months since my last perm. I am happy there are youtube videos, websites, and blogs that helps with the natural journey that many black women face today.
