Half European, Mary-Ann, aka Mai, begged her mom for a relaxer to have the same straight her as her European peers. At the age of 14 her mom finally gave in. Years later after she suffered from scalp burns and Mai’s hair was thin and brittle her sister who initially followed in Mai’s footsteps to relax her hair, inspired Mai to stop relaxing as she went natural before her Mai did.
