I have problem with dry scalp and hair. I’ve worn braids/twist for 12 years and not my hair is thinning. My beautician said my hair needed a break but is extremely dry.
Can you recommended natural hair products for me?
Depending on the style I’d wear the braids 1-2 months, depending on how big the twist 1-3 months. Currently, I am using Motions Shampoo and Conditioner but looking for a sulfate free shampooo. On my twist Organic Root Stimulator Smooth-n-Hold Pudding. I just purchased Miss Jessie’s Curly Buttercreme and Curly Meringue. The Meringue flaked so I rewet my hair and retwist. I use DOO GOO Growth-Itch oil for my scalp. I am still working on different styles….I want to try coils but don’t know where to begin. I have shoulder length hair and been told mine is too long to coils. I am over 40 and have been told “once you hit 40 your hair becomes thinner.” I also have heredity to deal with on both sides.
Hello Yvonne,
Your regimen to braid every 2 to 3 months doesn’t sound bad. You do have to be careful with the hairline though. Because this part is so fragile it needs extra care. Never add too much extension in the front and if possible redo it every 3 to 4 weeks so that it stays neat and buildup doesn’t get a chance.
Another thing that many extension wearers are unaware of is that one shouldn’t condition the hair while wearing extensions. Conditioners leave major buildup that hardens overtime. This makes the hair in the front inflexible and fragile and also hard to remove the braids when it is time.
While wearing braids its best to use oils and water based spritzes for maintenance. The nappshop offers a Going Natural Hair Care Package to make it easy to moisturize the hair after washing while it’s damp and a spritz to nurture the hair. Here is a tip to moisturize your hair and scalp overnight. Before going to bed use the and spritz the hair with the Scalp Conditioning Spray. Then cover hair with a conditioning cap and wrap the hair with the cap. Your hair and scalp will feel moisturized when you get up.
Don’t use a conditioning shampoo either. If you need a recommendation check out the shampoos that the nappshop offers and make your choice as to which one would work best for you.
If you like to try coils check out the section Hairstyles for instructions on how to do them on medium long hair. Here is the link.
