I got my first relaxer at the age of 13. Prior to that, my hair was completely natural and it was long and thick. I wanted to be like my peers and would envy the things that their hair could do. Back then, i didn’t realize my hair’s potential. Relaxers became a ritual for me, every time i would see a wave i would smother it with the “creamy crack”. I used curling irons, flat irons and spritzes that would make my hair stand at attention in a hurricane! I thought my hair looked good…it might have, but i was severely damaging it with every appliance and chemical i used.

I decided enough was enough…I wanted to go natural.

Now i embrace it. If anything this has taught me how to love and accept myself for who God created me to be and i have gotten others to do the same.

When i decided enough was enough, it was afteri ended up getting my hair cut off instead of a trim. I wanted to go natural , but didn’t think i was strong enough. I had been telling my daughter for years that her hair was gorgeous, but i wanted to be an example to her. I wanted to be an example to myself. Now i have been natural for four years and i don’t regret a thing! It is a freeing feeling to not have to go to the salon on a weekly basis or run from the rain! Now i embrace it. If anything this has taught me how to love and accept myself for who God created me to be and i have gotten others to do the same. I want to teach everyone who ever thought it not possible that it IS.
