How important is your hair to you?
Very!
When and why did you start locing?
1991 in Paris while touring. I had a live performance on Paris TV, and thought this would be a great time to start. I’m from the North Bronx, and I discovered an African Hair Care Salon in Paris owned by a Brother from Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon folks are neighbors to the North Bronx. I called his shop and made an appointment to start locing. Why- I was touring Internationally at that time in my life for months/years at a time. Previous to locs I was wearing my hair in a uptown Fade. I couldn’t keep the Fade in proper form while touring so often. The only place I could arrange hair cuts were at Military Bases, via the African Americans on Base. This was taking a toll on my time/interest in new Countries and Cities, so I decided to loc my hair.
Have you ever been stereotyped?
