To be honest, it’s been so long that I have been natural (more than 10 years) that I can’t really remember what prompted me to go natural in the first place, but I do remember that I never really liked how my hair looked when it was permed. It was pretty much lifeless and it did not grow very long. Also I was very interested in locs, so having my hair loose and natural at the time was an easy transition to locs.

When did you start locing?
I started locing in July of 2003 and I recently took them down in July of 2010, so that’s 7 years that I’d been loced. I took down my locs simply because I wanted a change but I really loved my hair when they were loced.
What was the hardest part of your journey?
I would say the hardest part of my journey was when I initially started my locs because that’s the stage for me when it was not as pretty as when locs mature.
And the best part?
The best part of having my locs was when they started getting some serious length, I’d say when they were mid my back. When I took them down they were touching my butt.
What did your hair journey teach you?
My hair journey has taught me that on the contrary to popular belief women with tightly curled hair like mine can grow to amazing lengths.
