My main purpose for going natural was originally to regain the healthy hair that I once had before I got a relaxer.
I made the transition during my Junior year in college while in nursing school. I never thought that I would be wearing my natural hair out in it’s natural state.I really didn’t know WHAT I was gonna do with my hair but all I knew that I was NEVER going to perm my hair again!
It was not until about a year ago that I actually started wearing my natural hair out exclusively. Goodbye and good riddins to the weave and the wigs!!!

Profession/Location: Registered Nurse, California
What method did you choose and why?
During my transition I wore wigs, weaves and used to get my hair pressed when I wasn’t wearing any weave.
What was the worst part of your journey?
The hardest part of my journey was actually getting started.I watched(and still watch) tons of youtube videos, vlogs, etc about natural hair and have really worked at finding products and tips that works for MY hair.Once I got alot of great tips and advice, things have been going pretty well.
And the best part?
I am so amazed at how many people contact me for natural hair advice.I love the fact that people view me as someone who actually knows about natural hair care and that they look up to.I never imagined that I’d be that one who people come to for advice. It’s a wonderful feeling and I love to share all the tricks and secrets that I know!
What did your hair journey teach you?
My hair journey has taught me how to love me…the REAL me! It has taught me that I am beautiful just as God created me.It’s taught me to appreciate where I came from and to embrace every aspect of that-Kinks,coils,curls and all! It has changed my life.
Describe your worst hairdo and your best hairdo and please include a picture if you can.
I cannot think of a horrible hairdo that I’ve had while being natural. My favorite hairdo so far was when my friend Charmaine(natural tresses hair studio,Fairfield,CA.)did my hair for a natural hair photoshoot she was doing. It’s kind of hair to explain the style but it was very afrocentric and I looked like I was straight from the motherland! Loved it!!! I think it’s called the tuck and pin.
Looking back, has your perception of your hair or black hair in general changed? Please elaborate.
It definitely has.Since I’ve been on my journey it really annoys me now when I hear someone say,She/he has good/bad hair.” I now look at ALL natural hair as “Good.” Before my journey I was saying that phrase too but now I think if you have 4Z(LOL) hair type it is allll good too!
Most girls loved their first perm. Do you remember yours? Was it a special occassion, how old were you and how did you feel about it?
I got my first relaxer in high school in the 10th grade. The biggest mistake of my life.Since I was little I used to get my hair pressed every two weeks by either my mom or a family friend of ours.I thought if I got a perm then I could just wake up and BAM,I would have long, flowy dangling hair just like that.Uhhh…not quite!
