I started my natural journey in July of 2003 by accident. I was in a bind and had been w/o a perm for months. I’ve always wanted to go natural, especially after seeing pictures of my family with their beautiful fros. I would also seen women on TV rocking their kinky tresses, but no one really in my town so I hesitated at first. When I was finally able to get a relaxer around 3 months later, I decided to take it back and officially start my journey. I began researching different blogs and sites. They were very helpful to me.
I began to gain knowledge was well as courage reading information, seeing pictures of many women and men who have already embraced their beautiful crowns. I’ve met some very awesome people and still keep in contact with them to this day. I’ve even ‘adopted’ some new sisters. 🙂

What was the worst part of your journey?
The hardest part for me was actually cutting my hair. It had NEVER been that short and kind of been my security blanket..still is. I was so worried about what people thought and how I could look. Even showing people my hair and seing their shock, sometimes disappointment was very disappointing to me. Learning about my particular hair types was quite a journey as well. That was kind of difficult to deal with at first, it’s like 3 or 4 different textures/types. With my hair also being so thick I never really thought I’d be able to maintain it. I remember having nightmares of being burned with the pressing comb. I thought that was the only way I’d be able to maintain my hair. Thank God it’s not and I’m still learning how to work with it after all these years. Right now I’m trying my BEST not to chop it off. I made a commitment to myself that I would let it get to my lower back/hip length. I have a few more inches to go. If I hadn’t chopped it so many times, I would’ve BEEN at that goal or surpassed it.
And the best part?
I love how soft my hair is. How versatile it is. I love how it fits my personality and how I can wear it long one day, short another day, wild and crazy, or discreet. There are so many things you can do with natural hair, I really wish I was good at styling my hair the way I’ve seen in pictures. I would try to go to a stylist but some say they’d charge me double..umm NO THANKS! 🙂
What did your hair journey teach you?
It has taught me quite a bit. I’ve learned about self-acceptance, even being more accepting of others in their own individual beauty. There’s nothing wrong with how God made me, hair included. Also, with embracing my individuality, I’ve become more comfortable in my skin and expressing my talents. Right now I’m just learning to love the moment I’m in. Same thing with my hair. I’m loving where it is right now.
Describe your worst hairdo and your best hairdo and please include a picture if you can.
My WORST hairdo would’ve been when I pretty much cut my hair into an afro mushroom cloud. Thank GOD I don’t have pictures of that..I never want anyone to see that! It took me DAYS to fix that flub up..never again! My best hair do would have to be my most recent style that I’ve done. I’m always thinking up something and brainstorming. I love vintage looks and I was able to achieve a 40-50’s era hairstyle. I was so happy about that. Still trying to get my Victory Rolls down though. I’ve even loved the pompadours. I was tickled when Janelle Monae came on the scene and made it her signature style. I just LOVE HER! She’s an amazing artist!
Looking back, has your perception of your hair or black hair in general changed? Please elaborate.
My perception on black hair and my hair has DEFINITELY CHANGED! It’s sad to say that I bought the hype at first. I was really scared at what people would think of me when I went natural. I’ve heard things and I got certain looks from people. No an afro doesn’t make you militant nor what people may think of as a weirdo. I’m not going through an identity crisis, nor is it an expression of sexual liberation, take it how you want! lol I’m not dirty. I shower everyday. I take care of myself. I take care of my hair. I comb and brush it when it needs it. I give it a little TLC! And YES I shampoo it! I’m not going to try to sell you any black soap, shea butter, or incense..but don’t test me! When I get my hands on some I may be knocking at your door..lol! I feel that I am more spiritual, less religious..but I think that comes with age and wisdom. At the same time, you should see some of the looks I get going to certain churches! Hilarious! lol I used to be offended, but not anymore. And it’s sad to say that locs seem to get the worst rap! I told some people I was considering loc’n my hair..you should see their eyes..smh. I’ve actually been wanting to loc for years now. I think they are SOOO BEAUTIFUL! And a MAN with a nice set of locs! Hold my mule! I’m just saying! haha!
What is your favorite hairstyle?
My favorite hairstyle has always been the frohawk. Though I haven’t worn it in a long time. It’s been years! I’ll have to rock it again REALLLLL SOON!
I love my hair because:
it is everything I am. Beautiful, versatile, one of God’s fabulous creations.
