I was using perm products for as long as I can remember.  My hair would come out and grow back.  I remember as a child wearing my short bush and loving the freedom I had then.  As I got older and life took its toll, my daughter heard me say so many times I should go natural again and start getting back to writing that poetry I use to write. She said “mom why don’t you just do it” and that day I cut my hair down to its natural root and my daughter and I locked my hair that day and I’ve been writing and doing spoken word since.

Eleven years ago

What was the hardest part of your journey?
Listening to others talk at me about my hair and saying things like it couldn’t be me.

And the best part?
Watching them eat the words and calling my hair beautiful

What did your hair journey teach you?
To love the person I knew I was.  I’ve always loved natural things on this earth just the way God made it.  He made no mistakes in making my hair the texture that it was…..he made my skin black and my hair nappy. That alone makes me special.

Looking back, has your perception of your hair or black hair in general changed? Please elaborate.
Yes people of color we are a beautiful people and when I was young I was told I was a nappy little yellow girl and that I should try more to look like the little white girls in order to be accepted so I press my hair and played with white dolls.  I wanted their hair but now honey I see that I was always beautiful and so was every other little nappy head black child.

What is your favorite hairstyle?
I wear my hair often in a pony tail because it’s getting so long.

Can you please finish the following sentence:
I love my hair because… Nappy hair is far more beautiful the texture alone is dark coarse and lovely. God took my hair and touched it with the strength of our ancestors and when he took a look at what he had done he said it was a good thing he had done.
