A Journey to Beauty

A Journey to Beauty

My Journey to Beauty! I received my very first relaxer in the fourth grade. By the time my fifth grade year had ended I already suffered from breakage and dryness. The worst damage that I had ever faced was when a quick-weave hairstyle tore out my edges along with other sections in my head. It was so bad that when you turned the stocking cap that the tracks were glued to, inside out, it looked as if there was enough of my hair attached to the glue and stocking cap to create a new wig! It was absolutely horrible and very painful.

My relaxed hair didnt stand a chance with the caked in glue caused by the hairstyle.

The glue had somehow matted itself within my relaxed hair and had become impossible to detach. I believe the fact that my hair was already relaxed beforehand, made it that much more suseptible to breakage. My relaxed hair didnt stand a chance with the caked in glue caused by the hairstyle. Due to the excessive damage, I was forced to cut my hair down to an inch in order to even out the damage. At that time, my hair had grown past my shoulders. It was something that I found very hard to do, but I had no choice at that point due to the patches in my head.

After having to cut my hair down to such a short length, it helped me to realize that cutting my hair was possible. I thought that cutting my hair would be horrific but I found myself actually very pleased with short hair! It gave me the courage to go ahead and shave my head nearly bald and believe it or not, I felt more beautiful without hair than I ever did in my life. I became acquainted with the beautiful and natural woman that had been living deep inside the entire time. A sense of self worth and beauty had been obtained from the experience.

It wasn’t only the response that I was getting from everyone that I had come in counter with, but the woman that I got to see in the mirror every morning. I loved my new sense of self satisfaction and the freedom from society’s mistaken rules of beauty. I kept my hair low for about 5 months and then once it started to grow out, I decided to go ahead and lock it. I have been locking my hair for a year now and I swear it feels like an adventure. There are so many different styles to choose from and the journey to my long cascading locks is so exciting. I also love to see the progress that others have achieved after going natural for so long. Its so encouraging!
