I went natural during my freshman year in college back in 1989, or was it ’90? I can’t remember. I didn’t have the money to pay for getting my hair done every few weeks, and I figured it would make things easier…PLUS, I had two white roomates, who would literally make popcorn and watch me as I did my hair. they were fascinated. It was aggravating.
Hi. I’m a 4a/4b/with a little 3c activity at the crown. I’ve been natural for 19 years, 17 of which were spent wearing a short caesar.
My favorite styles are twist-outs, bantu-knot outs, buns, puffs, wash- n-gos and my new favorite, the “bun-out”. I don’t use any products with parabens, sulfates, and most cones. (I do allow for amodimethicone sometimes).
I co-wash twice a week, deep condition once a month, and shampoo once a month. Attached are some photos, let me know if you need more info ok? (I really like your site by the way). The first pic is the caesar that I wore for years. Then a publicity shot and our wedding website shots I took the same day as the Facebook shot. Then my wedding and reception in Oct. Then a few other hairstyles from various events.
What was the hardest part of your journey?
I took a year to grow it out from the caesar, but I wore headwraps EVERY day. Then at the end of the year, I didn’t know what to DO with it. Products, styling, no idea. That was frustrating.
What did your journey teach you?
2 things. My hair is one of the MOST unique things about me. When I take better care of hair, I notice that I also take better care of myself.
