When, why how did you go natural?
Well, after truly learning about the oppression that black women face and the pressure and hegemony to make us think that our natural hair isn’t beautiful and that we need to assimilate into something that we are not, made me want to break free from that “idea of beauty” and rock what God gave me.

What was the hardest part of your journey?
Acceptance from society. Unfortunately black natural hair to most isn’t seen as beautiful because it is seen as different. Society pushes out the idea that you must have long flowing straight hair to be attractive and most importantly accepted. I was scared at first because I only knew styles of pressed hair or braids with extension but I eventually I was ready to just wear my hair in it’s natural state.
And the best part ?
Finding new tips and tricks to take care of my hair.
What did your hair journey teach you?
That it feels so good to be yourself.
Looking back, has your perception of your hair or black hair in general changed? Please elaborate.
Yes, I’ve always loved my black hair but the media never shows positive images of black hair in it’s natural state. It always has to be straighten or with a weave slapped on. If the media showed more images that showed black women with natural hair, young girls will feel more comfortable in their own skin.

Worse hairdo: These curls that didn’t come out right.
Best hairdo: Puff ponytail
