Everyone’s submissions were wonderful, which made it very challenging to pick just one. My top 2 choices were Natasha S. Houston and Desyray Keizer. My vote goes to Natasha S. Houston. Natasha hit the nail on the head when she said, “When we have a damaged internal perception of ourselves, we are prone to endure painful external situations. This stems far beyond matters of just hair.” She also had some very uplifting, funny and a couple of hit-close-to-home photos that many can relate to. Great job Natasha!

If you walk around ashamed of your hair, people will mirror your self-doubt. If you wear it proud and love it, they will shower you with love and positive reaction. The main ingredient is YOU.

Instead of combing my hair in a hurry, I learned to take my time and plan styles in advance. Detangling with my fingers and using a conditioner with slip when I comb has made it easier to detangle. Continued learning throughout my natural hair journey and the aforementioned tips have helped reduced breakage, split ends and helped me to retain my natural hair to new lengths.

My interest was sparked in truly natural hair because on more than one occasion I heard women say, “I feel naked with out my weave”. For some reason that upset me the most, why couldn’t black women be happy with their natural hair?

When we have a damaged internal perception of ourselves, we are prone to endure painful external situations. This stems far beyond matters of just hair.

I learned about gentler ways to handle my hair. I found better ways to comb out, or “detangle,” my hair. I realized that braids and other styles shouldn’t cause any pain. *And, for the record, I haven’t used a blow dryer in almost two years.

My main focus here is to show women what I learned from my journey. That our hair is like a fabric, not a plant. For example hair, like clothing it can only be preserved. The older parts of our hair is the weakest and most fragile just like our oldest pieces of clothing wither with age.
Desyray Keizer
I felt more beautiful without hair than I ever did in my life. I became acquainted with the beautiful and natural woman that had been living deep inside the entire time. A sense of self worth and beauty had been obtained from the experience.

People wondered why I would cut all that “pretty” hair off. My first attempt at being natural allowed me to see my own beauty, my natural self with no fillers. I loved it, it was the period of The Fugees and everyone called me Lauren Hill!
I try to encourage natural sisters as well as transitioners alike to explore the options and creativity that having natural hair can provide!

If anything this has taught me how to love and accept myself for who God created me to be and i have gotten others to do the same.

I want black women to know that they shouldn’t be afraid of what the world thinks of their natural hair, and they shouldn’t be afraid of themselves.
