Okay, so coming this October 14, 2007, I will celebrate my 1st natural anniversary. There are several reasons why I decided to become natural, but for the sake of time, and space, I’ll just list a few.
One reason is because the relaxer was making my hair extremely dry, and break off. I got sick and tired of going through these spells of one minute my hair would grow like wild flowers, then the next minute it would break off like a twig.
Another reason is because I hated driving to Detroit every two weeks, especially in the winter, I was not only wasting gas, but also wasting money cause Michigan is so cold, you have to wear something over your head in order not to freeze to death; so there was really no point.
One of the more serious reasons is because alopecia was a generational curse on my dad’s side of the family among the women, and I was paranoid of loosing my hair. The relaxer made my hair thin, and it seemed like the more I relaxed, the thinner my hair got. I thought the relaxer was one of the causes for alopecia in my family. I thank God that because of the precious blood of Jesus Christ, I don’t have to suffer from generational curses! Praise God for knowledge of his Word! With knowledge comes responsibility, so it became my duty to be a good Stewart over my hair.
Now with all that being said, I decided to wear my hair in kinky twists for one full year. In between getting new twists, I noticed when I washed and blow dried my hair, that it was getting longer, and longer. Not only that, but my itchy, dry scalp was getting better and better. It was then that I decided I was done with relaxers!
No more suffering from not being able to scratch my head in fear that the relaxer will burn the flesh off my scalp!
No more smelling like eggs for a week after I get a relaxer!
No more sitting in the chair wanting to stick my head in a bucket of ice because it burns so bad, but the stylest hasn’t worked it all in, and I wanted my hair to be bone straight so I’d bite down on my lip and pray for her to hurry up!
No more picking scabs out my head!
No more wanting to slap the crap out of my stylist because she sprayed my hair with spritz and that junk has alcohol in it, so it burned the mess out of me every time she sprayed it! And no more running for cover when it looks like it’s about to rain in fear of my hair getting wet, and ruining all that torture I sat through.
Nope yall, there’s not one single thing I miss about having a relaxer. If I want my hair straight I’ll just flat iron, or press it. I’m not hating on anybody who has a relaxer, but it’s just not for me! I’m lovin the tresses the good Lord gave me!!!
