The hardest part of my journey is figuring out what works best for my hair, which can change depending on if I am in New York or Vermont and even goes deeper into depending on how to adjust my hair products to the specific season. Finding the perfect product is still a challenge as well as dealing with troublesome fairy knots.
Inspired by my mom to go natural, I slowly began watching the vbloggers and youtube videos my mom sent me. I was shocked but also admired by my mom’s courage to cut off her hair and start anew. Throughout college, my hair began to become extremely damaged because of the perm as well as the harsh Vermont air. After trying everything I could to manage my hair, I decided to start transitioning by wearing braids. I began my natural hair journey the summer of my sophomore year of college. After transitioning for a year I decided I was ready to take that leap and cut off my relaxed ends. Under the worried glances from my mom I decided to hack each strand off. My hair was a cute curly bob and I was excited to show off my new look!

What was the worst part of your journey?
The hardest part of my journey is figuring out what works best for my hair, which can change depending on if I am in New York or Vermont and even goes deeper into depending on how to adjust my hair products to the specific season. Finding the perfect product is still a challenge as well as dealing with troublesome fairy knots.
And the best part?
The best part of my hair journey is being truly happy with how I look, as well as being knowledgeable about products and what I put into my hair. I also love the versatility of being natural and all the hairstyles it enables me to do, since I definitely love to switch it up all the time. Furthermore, I love how being natural produces a sense of community. Many people have walked up to me and asked me what I use in my hair or even strike up a conversation about natural hair.
What did your hair journey teach you?
My hair journey taught me to educate myself not only with what I put in my hair but also be aware of what are in products I use daily.
Describe your worst hairdo and your best hairdo and please include a picture if you can.
I love having a voluminous and bouncy braidout or twist out.
I don’t really believe I have what to be considered a worst hairdo because I never leave the house without loving how I’ve styled my hair.
Looking back, has your perception of your hair or black hair in general changed? Please elaborate.
I believe that the perception of my views on black hair and my hair have changed because before I was skeptical that it would ever grow unless you had that magical gene. I was always told I had the “good” hair but once I permed and went to scissor happy salonist I thought that my hair would never grow beyond shoulder length. Now that education, plus products are directed for black hair I feel that the embracing of natural hair for the younger generations will be the norm. I feel proud that we now have the option to either perm or not perm and know that we can take care of our own hair.
What is your favorite hairstyle?
