My last relaxer was in February 2005. I transitioned for a year and BC’d in February of 2006. I’ve never looked back or regretted my decision. I decided to go natural mainly because I wanted to see if my hair would grow longer and be healthier while natural as opposed to being relaxed.
What was the best part and the worst?
The best part has been learning what my hair likes and doesn’t like. Once you get the hang of giving your hair what it needs as well as what it likes, then you will be overcome with joy. That’s how it was for me.
What did your hair teach you?
My hair journey is constantly teaching me. As of today, my hair journey has taught me to accept the texture that I have. If I love it, then it will love me back; meaning that if I take care of it and nurture it from the inside out, then it will grow, become stronger, and blossom into a head full of luscious curls, kinks, waves, and coils. It also taught me about other people. If I wasn’t confident and had the mindset that I was ready for the challenges and exciting times that natural hair would bring, then I would have let others decide what I should do to my hair on my behalf. People will only do what you allow them to do. I had the naysayers telling me lots of things, but I was dead set on my natural journey and there was nothing that could say to make me turn back.
Yes. I never thought that natural hair could be so versatile. If I had known then what I know now, I would have never turned to the relaxer.
I love my hair because … through all of the torture from the past it still continues to grow. It has an unconditional love for me and vice versa.
