1) Don’t buy into the hype and obsess about hair length.
If you concentrate on keeping your hair healthy, it will grow to its fullest extent naturally! For some this is shoulder length. For some it is on the back. Just because your hair may not grow to the lengths of another, doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with your hair. It just means your hair growth phase is shorter. Everyone’s hair growth phases (anagen, catagen, telogen) are different, and mainly genetically determined.
2) Do not load your hair up with lots of products trying to make it shine.
Curly hair usually does not shine, but may have a natural sheen. The curls and coils of your hair absorb light and that is why it will not shine like straight hair. Straight hair shines because it reflects light. The smooth part of your puff or twists will usually have a sheen but they will not reflect light like glass!
3) Don’t be sad that your hair doesn’t look/act/feel like someone else’s hair. It’s unproductive. And for all you know, there’s someone else pining over what you’ve got.
4) Blowdryers, and other heat instruments are not your friends.
Don’t get sucked into using them to show off length. Your hair will grow better without them and soon you won’t “need” them to show off your length because your length will be there. Don’t and you won’t have to trim the crispy ends.
5) Do not be afraid to trim if need be.
Believe me, I know when you are trying to reach your hair length goals, it can be so hard to cut off damaged parts or split, rough ends and let go of all that hair. However, it is better to lose a little bit of hair than to lose a lot due to breakage and poor hair health. Unless you are having some possible health issues, it will grow back stronger and healthier.
6) Mats, knots and tangles……..
do NOT rip that brush/comb/fingers through your hair when you’re faced with tangles, don’t get frustrated, stressed-out or panic.
8) Do not become a PJ aka product junkie. What works for one hair type, might not work for yours! You may end up spending lots of money on stuff that doesn’t work and you’ll have a bunch of products junking up your bathroom shelves
9) Moisture is your hair’s best friend but don’t confuse moisture with oil.
Water moisturizers and oils act as emolients, which soften, lubricate and seal in moisture. Water is stored in the cortex of your hair shaft, the layer just under the cuticles and is responsible for you hair’s elasticity, i.e., it’s ability to stretch without breaking. Many nappies discover their hair doesn’t necessarily need oils, but no one’s hair can thrive without being properly moisturized. Deny your hair of moisture, and you set yourself up for having to deal with dry, brittle hair that is prone to split ends and breaking mid shaft.
Remember:
Water = Moisture
Oil = emolient, lubricate, seal
10) DO NOT be discouraged.
If you are frustrated with your hair, put the comb down until you cool off. Buy a wig, but whatever you do, don’t take it out on your hair (i.e. dry combing, etc.).
As a bonus:
Keep it simple!
You would be surprised how low maintenance leads to a healthy head of hair.
