Grow your own. Now obviously, that will take a little while and there is a whole range of methods that you can use to start them (two strand twists, palm rolling or comb twists just to name a few) as well as a wealth of information on how to maintain them.
Assuming, however, that you don’t have the time or the inclination to go that route, then there is another option:
Extensions!
They are a great option whether you are transitioning, want a change of pace or want to make your locs appear thicker.
Extensions with an Afro texture give the best results.
If you want to make your own locs, then buy some bulk Kanekalon fibre, back comb and comb twist them then set with hot water……although the reality takes a bit longer and is a bit more work than that!
Because it is quite time consuming and tiring, you may opt to have a loctician put the extensions in for you.
If, however, you are feeling up to the challenge, then here’s what you need to do:
- Make sure your hair is freshly washed, conditioned and dried.
- Starting from the back, section your hair into squares of about 1cm by 1cm.
- Tie back the rest of your hair so it doesn’t get in the way.
- Split the section in two, then take a dreadlock and place in the center.
- Wrap the dreadlock around one side of the section and then the other alternately to secure it.
- Continue until you reach the end of your hair then loop through the base.
- Keep going until your head is covered.
- Go out and enjoy your new locs!
