What is your earliest memory of doing hair?
The Jheri curl was going out of style so cuts were coming in again so I started doing my friends’ hair. That was at the age of 16.

How, why and when did you get into natural hairstyling?
After being a barber for 8 tot 10 years, people allover started barbering so I decided to take it to the next step. You could say it was a natural progression. I had locs also, I wear them now for 15 years. Yes I trim them to maintain them in a nice bun.

What is so special about natural, nappy, kinky hair?
Like you say it’s natural. I like to stay away from chemicals.

Did you ever relax your hair? If yes, what made you decide to stop? If no, why not?
Never. I don’t know if it was a conscious choice but I just never liked the look. It wasn’t for me.

I know the service industry is quite demanding. There are some nasty customers out there. So can you give us a few behavior tips and describe your ideal customer?
Oh, I get rid of nasty customer. The best customer is somebody who just trusts what you do and let you do your thing.

And the worst one?
The ones with unreasonable expectations. They will bring in a picture and even if you tell them it’s going to work for them they still want it and if it doesn’t work out, they’ll complain.

What is your signature style?
Just look at the pictures.

If you could give any celebrities a hair makeover who would it be. Why and how would you style that person?
Hmmm, I still have to think about this one.

Can you name one or more highlights of your achievements up until now?
At 23 I opened my first barber shop in Trinidad. Three years ago I opened a salon with friends and in January of this year I opened my own shop: Delux Gallery! I am proud and happy about that.

Natural hair seems quite hip right now. Locs are everywhere, it looks like the afro is back. Do you think it’s just a fashion phase? That this will pass just like the afro in the 60’s and as soon as the fashion is over we will all go back and straighten our hair again or do we really begin to embrace our natural hair?
No, I don’t think it’s a phase. People have less time today so it’s more convenient. People are just tired of the chemicals and fixing their hair every morning.
