“The best part about going natural is the excitement and anticipation of your new profound growth, styles that could be done, and the fact that it’s YOUR natural hair.”
When, why how did you go natural?
I decided to go natural about six years ago. I made this drastic decision when I was about fifteen years old. From swim practice, to constantly playing various sports, I decided that my hair needed to just be NATURAL ! I realized that putting harsh chemicals into my hair, wasn’t benefiting neither me nor my hair. I started off my natural hair process, by washing my hair daily and using hair conditioner in my hair before I went to sleep at night. When I would wake up my hair would be full of kinky curls, but very frizzy.
What was the hardest part of your journey?
The hardest part of my journey was being able to accept who I was, despite the hairstyle, or of what nature my hair was in. Also, I would always contemplate about what my friends and family would think about my hair choice or decisions. Acceptance from society is a major deal to a teenager, but I began to realize that it’s what I liked not what THEY/THEM/OTHERS liked.
And the best part ? And what did your hair journey teach you ? Describe your worst hair do and your best hairdo.
The best part about going natural is the excitement and anticipation of your new profound growth, styles that could be done, and the fact that it’s YOUR natural hair. My hair journey taught me patience. The quote “Good things come to those who wait” is absolutely true, and pertains to everyone. My worst hairdo is ponytail; this hairstyle has practically become mundane for me. My best hairdo is Bantu Knots; I absolutely love this hair style!
Looking back, has your perception of your hair or black hair in general changed? Please elaborate.
Yes, my perception of my hair has changed. In the past I believed my hair was only obligated to certain hairstyles. Presently, I am more knowledgably; I discovered there are endless hairstyles you can achieve with your own natural hair.
Most girls loved their first perm. Do you remember yours? Was it a special occassion, how old were you and how did you feel about it?
I don’t quite remember the specific day, but I remember going to the sixth grade, so I must have been 11 years old. I remember for the first day of school, I rocked my newly fresh perm. I loved how my hair flowed in the wind, and the appearance of my hair made it seem healthy. At that age, I thought a perm was a good choice for my hair. I was young and naïve, I didn’t know any better. My mother wasn’t well-informed on hair care, so that also played a role of me obtaining my first perm ever.
What is your favorite hairstyle?
Flat twist going into a crown, with the rest of my hair in curls.
