Tiara is a Receptionist who lives in Brooklyn. We met at an African Braiding salon where she got a beautiful hairstyle done. When she told me the reasons she went natural, I asked her to send in her story.
When, why and how did you go natural?
I went natural in 2010 where I did a “BC” (big chop). I was looking to go natural for some time and I was hesitant. One day I had just gotten a full head of weave put in with a new perm and a random neighbor of mine said to me “Stop supporting all these hair vendors so much. Just embrace your hair naturally.” His comment stuck with me and I was like okay Tiara it’s time to stop playing around. On December 23, 2010 I went to a barbershop and cut it all off and have never looked back since.
What was the hardest part of your journey?
The hardest part of my journey was going through the phase where my hair began growing again. Not really having any hair to work with was hard for me seeing as I always had some form of hair to style etc.
And the best part?
The best part is just enjoying my hair, seeing the transformation and continuing to learn about how to properly take care of my kinks.
What did your hair journey teach you?
No matter what your hair choice is you are beautiful.
Looking back, has your perception of your hair or black hair in general changed? Please elaborate.
Yes I was conditioned to think that my hair or black hair in general was nappy or “naps” but now I know everyone has a different hair texture and that my hair is not nappy but kinky.
Most girls loved their first perm. Do you remember yours? Was it a special occasion, how old were you and how did you feel about it?
My first perm was at a very young age but I know when I was younger and I got perms I felt like a new person. I would feel prettier.
What is your favorite hairstyle?
Two stand twists
