I decided to go natural when I was in 12th grade. I had always wanted to go natural every since I could remember. I would watch videos on YouTube of all the woman who have gone natural, and I felt as if that would be a a smart decision for me to make. I also have had bald side every since I was 12 and me going natural helped them just a small bit. I got my last per April 2011 just before prom and graduation.

Profession/Location: Full Time Student ,Memphis, Tennesse
How did you go natural?
I have been transitioning since April of 2011. I don’t have any intentions on big chopping my hair. I chose this method because it was more convenient for me. I didn’t want to go into college with really short hair. My hair grows fast also so this is another reason I chose the transitioning method.
What was the worst part of your journey?
The hardest part was the beginning when I had curls and straight ends. I only liked my hair to be straightened, so I would use my flat iron very often. With making that decision to use them repeatedly I ended up damaging my curly hair.
And the best part?
The best part about my journey is right about now when almost all of my hair is curly, I have been trying to restrain from using my flat iron. It is paying off well. Also the use of my JBCO (Jamaican Black Castor Oil). It is great product. It had helped my bald sides that has been bald since I was at;east 12 years old. I am not 20 you could imagine what type of feeling these results are giving me.
What did your hair journey teach you?
My hair journey has taught me perseverance. In the beginning I wanted to give up and get a perm. I wasn’t feeling this natural thing anymore because I’m a college student and didn’t know what to do with my curly roots and straight ends together. I decided to keep going and now my curls are tighter and almost complete.
Looking back, has your perception of your hair or black hair in general changed? Please elaborate.
I have always loved all the textures of african american hair. atahere is so much we can do with our hair. We can petty much do whatever. I love the texture of my hair.
Most girls loved their first perm. Do you remember yours? Was it a special occassion, how old were you and how did you feel about it?
I do not remember my first perm. I was about five my mom said. I bet it was horrible because even when I was getting perms I hated them because they burned so bad.
