We all remember the controversy of Gabby Douglas, the first Black gymnast to ever win Olympic gold. While the whole country fell in love with her outstanding performance a few Black people who are probably ashamed of nappy hair, made a fuzz about miss Gabby’s edges.

Her new natural hair growth stood out against the straightened hair and that was a no-no according to the Professional Black Hair Rating Commission that set themselves the task to rate the nappiness of celebrities hair and bring out reports. They try to shame anyone who is out of line according to their backward standards to submit to the oppressive unwritten hair rules that have always threatened the health of our Black Follicles. The same commission that also misjudged Blue Ivy’s hair and started the Comb her hair petition against Beyonce.
The experience wasn’t just painful for the athlete. I think we all felt it in a way because somehow we can all relate to a situation like that. It’s one of the collective experiences we share that is rooted in our history.
Still, I am hopeful that with the new upcoming generation, this doesn’t have to be. Meet Zoë, the eight year old gymnast from the Netherlands who wins titles while rocking and loving her natural hair.
As one of the few young talents who made the national team and already won a few titles, little miss Zoë has been in front of the cameras more than a few times. Yet, she didn’t get her hair straightened, pressed or a weave, no, she just got the Going Natural Hair Care products.
The talented gymnast who loves to wear her natural hair out and let her curls be free, needed the No More Knots to untangle after training.
Once her mom who does her hair every week, had a chance, she washed Zoë’s hair with the Going Natural Herbal Shampoo, used the deep conditioner then followed up with the Going Natural Silky Shea Butter. I am so glad she sent me pictures. Just looking at the results is a joy.
Zoë who makes her own hairstyle choices changed up and went for a puff followed by a bun.
Her hair looked so healthy and shiny that people thought her hair was fake. Her mom was quick to clear things up and point out that it was her daughter’s real hair and that the little gymnast used the Going Natural hair Care products.
Zoe’s hair was so shiny, people thought it was fake hair! So at the recommendation of Zoë’s mom,
I put together this Going Natural Kid’s special to make every child’s hair happy, healthy and shiny.
