Invited by Sabine’s Hallway for their yearly event The Natural Aristocratic Tea, I had to style my hair a little differently. After all it was a Royal Affair, so even if a hat was likely to be part of the outfit, the natural hairstyle underneat also had to be upscale and on point.
In all honesty, I am not a very good stylist and far from a fancy one. What I mastered during my natural hair days was an easy Twist Out and I definetly knew How to make a Fro, is still my favorite natural hairstyle. Now, two years into my loc journey, I still haven’t tried much but ocassions like this force me to up my game. So I did!
Laugh if you will but since I still lack the skills to barrel roll my locs or to do any one of those fancy techniques, I fall back on the old ones I still remember from the Suriname days when I had my little Afro. Back in those days, women would use pieces of newspaper or paper from magazines if you will, to curl their hair. Even though it was during my childhood, so many years ago, I still remember it because I admired the style so much. With the right natural hair products you don’t need heat to get a nice, soft curl that will stay in for at least three days.
I’ve always wanted to try it on my natural hair but just never got to it. What I did do instead was curling my hair with Flexy Rods which is basically the same idea. So today you don’t need to tear pieces of paper you can buy rods but if you don’t have rods, I recommend you use a few brown paper bags. The only minus is that it is not resuable but other than that it’s more than affordable and the best part: easy to sleep on!
So here is what you need:
