Mireille on Challenge 3

Black woman with afro and cornrowsCarlie
I like your idea of weaves and flowers in your hair but I have to say I am disappointed in the execution. This is a modeling competition who takes the best photos and you say this:
Unfortunately, because of the darkness of my hair, the flower does not show in the pictures.
That doesn’t make sense to me.
I don’t see the creativity of the style in your photos but your steps are clear. The overall style does not do it for me.  Although your lightening is better, the rest of the criticism is the same as last week. Your photos aren’t sharp. In your first photo I can see that your complexion, your skin and your teeth are beautiful and your pose is nice but it’s just not a good enough photo.

Again photographically speaking on the overall look of the photos…

Desyray– I like your makeup and being a loc wearer myself I can clearly see your locs are beautiful and the style  is nice but a photo no-no would be standing directly in front of a pole or an item that will have distracting things sticking out behind your head. It distracts away from the subject unless the photographer fills the frame eliminating those distracting elements.. The 2nd photo is one of the better one but even that the branches are distracting. Definitely not liking the photo covering up your neck. Elongating the neck in photos are attractive and it shows confidence.

Carlie– I love the “How to achieve this style” section that was a good idea and nice touch. I like that you attempted to give us different looks. In regards to the photo with the blue background, I feel in this photo your eyes and smile are best and you look beautiful but the photo itself is not good, the background is cheesy and I’m not a fan of cutting a person out of the original photo and placing them into a different background and that’s what this photo appears to be. I love your eyes in the last photo but I don’t like the way the photo has been cropped to close to your chin. Although you gave the excuse of not being able to see the flower because of the darkness of the hair I know for a fact that even a dark flower can read beautifully in a photo. Over all the photos are substandard.

Jalita-I like your makeup. Adding the directions on how to achieve this look is good! and I do love a good Mohawk style. The long maxi like you’re wearing would have been perfect to really rock this look but I feel you fell weak with displaying Mohawk style. I could not tell it was even a Mohawk until I got to last photo. Over all the photos are weak and your modelling needs some work. Your eyes look lifeless and you have to remember to MOVE in a photo. Don’t just stand there, remember you’re wanting the readers and viewers to want your look! Models sell a look.

Kala– Loooove the tuck and roll style! Gorgeous, you sold me on that style with the main photo and the last photo. I feel you should work on the way you hold your mouth and at times your eyes can look a little lifeless as well. Again, cropping a photo to close to the chin is a no no and makes for a bad photo. I like the overall styling of your look and the bright colors are fun.

Chassity– FABULOUS! You had me at the first photo. Gorgeous make up, beautiful hairstyle, love the flower, beautiful photos..I would want to be natural looking at your pictures. You sold it well.  In regards to the styling I would not have added the lace sweater jacket but other than that you look beautiful although you do look a little “lost (without emotion)” in the face in the 4th photo..so work on that. Over all I’m satisfied!

ReShonda– Muuuuuuch better! I love the look you’re giving in your main photo but I’m not a fan of the way you’re holding that back shoulder. Beautiful hair, love the flower, Looove the bright brilliant colors in your wrap and makeup. Not liking the waterfall photo or the second photo after that one but other than that I thought you represented the twist out style beautifully! I would want this style by looking at your photos.

Natasha–  I’m liking the twisted knot set style. I wish I could have seen more of the colorful printed top or dress you had on considering your makeup was beautifully done. I feel being in a less distracting background would have made your look pop more but because of the exotic makeup and the distracting background the hair got lost in the mist but then again it might not have it the photos were done better. Photos 2-4 you were not modelling at all. Remember you’re selling a look. I wish I could have seen the ENTIRE style on at least 1 photo.

Justyce– I looove your smile! You have such a fun smile it makes me smile when I see it. Considering this style was achieved with one hand I really love it. It’s a beautiful 2-in-1 style. Not liking the small flower or Flower Lei around the hairline but I can appreciate what you were attempting to do. Same with you, remember you are modelling,  your photos were ok but didn’t stand out.

Nefertiti– I like your twist on the French roll .. very nice. No liking the hugh flower. In regards to that particular photo, I’m not liking your overall look and expression. The 3-5 photos are nice but overall I wasn’t sold on wanting this look. In regards to styling I wish I could have seen the ENTIRE look in at least one of the photos. You look cute but I need you to MODEL and sell me on your look.

Ladies, I know this is about hair but don’t be shy in regards to showing off your entire overall style in at least 1 photo. Readers are inspired by an entire look.

In conclusion, my least favorite and uninspiring for this challenge and the one I would eliminate would be Jalita. My favorite for this challenge would be: Chassity!

Simeko – Feedback on Week 3

This week’s challange was exciting for me because I am a Natural Hair Care Stylist, but I must say I was very disappointed.  As beautiful and versatile as our natural hair is, I certainly thought I would see much more creativity with the styles.  Every style that was done this week were basic styles that I see all the time….and don’t get me wrong there is nothing wrong with this, but this is a competition so basis is not good enough.  This shoot was suppose to be about the hair style and I don’t think any of the models really captured that.  With that said, the two styles that I thought were most creative was that of KALA and NEFERTITI.  In the running is RESHONDA as well.

KALA – Your style was beautiful yet simple to accomplish.  However, the instructions were not as detailed as they should have been.  For example you mention how to do the three rolls/buns in the back but left out how to acheive the bump on the top.  It would have been nice to see more angles of the style as well.

NEFERTITI – Your style was creative and the most original I’ve seen in the competition because you used your own hair as an accessory.  However, I feel like I couldn’t really see the beauty of the style.   And I didn’t see any instructions on how to accomplish that look.

RESHONDA – Although I didn’t think your style was very creative, your hair look fabulous. As beautiful as your hair looked just as it was, you definitely could have shown different ways to style it.   Your instructions were detailed and easy to follow.  Your photos were great and I thought they really captured the nature of this shoot.

My choice for winner is RESHONDA

My choice for elimination is JUSTYCE CHAVEZ

LeAnne on Challenge 3

This was the hardest challenge to date. All the ladies brought their A game and definitely stepped it up for this challenge.  All of the pictures showed creativity, individuality, and LOVELY natural textures! One thing that I would have liked from all of the ladies is a picture that showed them creating the style! Thinking in terms of a magazine article and how-to instructions, we need those in between shots to give us a gauge that we are doing it right!  I was also missing pictures of the back of the hair. That lets me know what I can expect when doing it myself. Can I make it look like yours? Are the backs polished? This would help me to know if I can achieve this look on my own at home using the tutorial!

My top choice this week is Natasha: Natasha gave great instructions, and showed how you can be creative with short hair.  She thought about the finished look with accessories and makeup that was FLAWLESS.

Kcurly- Feedback Week 3

My picks for this week were ReShonda and Chassity. My pick for elimination was Justyce.

Chassity- All of your shots were beautiful. Loved the hair, makeup, clothes.

Reshonda- There wasn’t a shot that I didn’t love. I loved the vibrant colors you wore in both clothing and make up. Great job! I wish you’d been a little more detailed with your instructions (for example, how many twists did you put in?)

Carlie- I love how you always seem to throw something unique into the mix. The picture where you were picking the products off the tree was great. However, I so wish you would’ve picked a flower that was visible in your hair.

Jalita- I like the colors you chose and I like the creative style, but I couldn’t see it as well as I liked. I also don’t feel that your instructions were very clear.

Kala – Very chic style and lovely makeup and color choices. The instructions had me lost, however.

Natasha-I liked the feel of your photos, your hairstyle, instructions, and color choices. I do think there was too many bushes/plants in your backgrounds. They overpowered you.

Nefertiti- Your style was definitely among the most creative and your instructions very detailed. You were also good about showing different angles of the style. I do think you also had too many bushes/plants in the background. It was hard for me to focus on you. But your pictures gave me an earthy, natural feel.

Justyce- The style you showcased was ok, but I didn’t like really the accessories you chose. I don’t think the lei complimented the style very well at all.

Desyray- You’re a beautiful woman and your locs looked lovely but I don’t think this camera/lighting really reflected that fully. I also think that you might’ve gotten a little more creative with your styling. Curly locs are a nice style but I would’ve loved to see you go a step further with them.

Yardley / The Coil Review’s Vote for Challenge #3

My job is hard as a judge each week, but all of the contestants make it fun! The styles that were presented this week showed how versatile and creative natural hair can be. And when you’re using the right products, it makes it that much easier to sculpt a style that’s uniquely you, but also helps maintain the style while expressing the beauty of nature.

My top picks are Nefertiti with her sassy French roll with a twist, Kala giving us the essence of nature and Chassity, where she showed how to bring our hair to life, naturally and easily. My final selection? Chassity! Her Bantu Knots were beautifully sculpted, and the description on how to achieve the look was very intuitive. Good job Chassity!

Elimination: Carlie. It was difficult to see the style. It would have been great to see how creative the back of the hair was. Pretty photos nonetheless.

Until next week!

Yardley

Dawn on Challenge 3

“Once again, all of you ladies look beautiful! I love the colors and brightness and the creativity in styling. I also really enjoyed reading step by step how you all created your styles and what products from the Going Natural line that you used.

My favorite this week is Chassity. I love the fact that she stuck with the theme of nature, but took it from a different angle. Instead of focusing on the tropics, she focused more on a canyon and water look. It worked! I also liked the hairstyle that she came up with. Very easy to do and a great look for any occasion.

My choice for elimination this week is Desyray. While your pictures were beautiful, I didn’t see the nature theme and your poses were not as creative as they were in the previous challenges.”

Thanks,
Dawn
