Kcurly’s Picks

Kcurly’s Picks

Kcurly judge on ANNM 2012Carlie M is my pick for the winner this week. Runner’s up for me would be Natasha, Nefertiti and Jalita.

Carlie M

I probably enjoyed your essay the most out of all the models. I think the “you are in control” message would resonate with a lot of ladies out there who are suffering from damaged hair. The shot of your hair when damaged versus healthy was very dramatic and got your point across well. The photos themselves were beautifully taken and I liked that your styles included an undo.  Gorgeous hair, makeup…the whole package!

Good photographs that went well with the subject. Her story mirrored my own story. I felt like she was honest in her response. I like her photographically.

Yardley Messeroux, TheCoilReview.com – Challenge #1

yardley on challenge 1Everyone’s submissions were wonderful, which made it very challenging to pick just one. My top 2 choices were Natasha S. Houston and Desyray Keizer. My vote goes to Natasha S. Houston. Natasha hit the nail on the head when she said, “When we have a damaged internal perception of ourselves, we are prone to endure painful external situations. This stems far beyond matters of just hair.” She also had some very uplifting, funny and a couple of hit-close-to-home photos that many can relate to. Great job Natasha!

LeAnne on Challenge 1

LeAnne on Challenge 1

LeAnn on ANNMChallenge 1 was a very hard challenge to portray pictorially. All of the models showcased healthy, beautiful hair and polished pictures. What sets the Next Natural Model apart is her ability to express the challenge through her pictures as well as through her words! With this challenge, I had 3 very quick top selections that I believe did a good job of showing the challenge and/or showcased polished pictures that I can see in a magazine spread. My advice to all the models is to really dig into the challenge, be creative in your approach and in your hair styling, and really think about the finished look! You must always showcase a polished and ready for the runway or the magazine spread look! Good luck ladies!

Simeko on Challenge 1

Simeko on Challenge 1

Simeko Watkins-HartleyAlthough I think both Natasha and Jalita captured this challenge with their photos,  my choice winner for Challenge 1 is Carlie M!  Although her photos were not as creative, I think she really captured the essence of what it really means to go and stay natural when she said “The only difference is I now love my hair.  It would appear that my love and self confidence are what people are reacting to and mirroring.  If you walk around ashamed of your hair, people will mirror your self-doubt.  If you wear it proud and love it, they will shower you with love and positive reaction.  The main ingredient is YOU.”  And she has NO chemicals in her hair, ie relaxer, color, etc.  I often get asked as a professional natural hair care stylist;

Dawn on Challenge 1

Dawn on Challenge 1

I have to say that I truly enjoyed reading all of the touching stories on why the models went natural or decided to take better care of their natural hair. It is always very interesting to me to learn that background information about someone’s natural hair journey. I also thought that all of the models had beautiful, fierce natural hair! Great job ladies!

My favorite in this challenge is Nefertiti. I love the quality of her shots and her choice of poses and props made me feel like I was seeing her in a magazine article about the topic of hair damage.
