There’s no denying that we’ve gone barmy over dinner parties recently. The humour and competitiveness of shows like Come Dine With Me have brought back our love for eating in. There’s never been a better time to catch up with some long-lost friends in the comfort of your own home. However, because of their popularity, impressions at dinner parties aren’t just based on food and ladies clothing – oh no.
Evening entertainment and after dinner activities are just as important as what you wear and what you serve up, so get up to scratch with these hilarious party games...
The Phoney Phrase
This is a great game if people don’t know one another and you’re in need of an icebreaker. Write a different phrase down on pieces of paper, and slip these under everyone’s plates. Try and be as random as possible, ‘I recently ate Horse meat,’ or ‘I’m genuinely worried about denim,’ – it makes it more fun. As your guests sit down, tell them to secretly read their phrase and tell them that at some point during the evening they’ve got to get their comment into conversation and pass it off as fact. When you’re having coffee, your guests have to decide the phrase they think is phoney.
Kissing Cuddly Bear
Ok, so this game will depend on how over friendly (or racy) your guests are! You’ll need a teddy bear. Pass the bear round and invite everyone to kiss the bear, wherever they like. Once people have had a few glasses of wine, you’ll find that bear suddenly gets some extremely suggestive smooches! When everyone’s had a go, you announce round two – you have to kiss your fellow guests where you just kissed the bear!
Why oh why?
Give your guests a strip of paper and a pen. Each person has to write a question about one of their fellow guests, for example – ‘why didn’t Alex finish her food?’ or ‘why has Mark been so giggly tonight?’. All the strips are gathered up and distributed at random. Without reading the question, everyone must write the answer on their paper. They’re gathered again, and given out at random. Everyone then reads out the question and answer on their piece of paper – you get hilarious combinations like, ‘Why has Mark been so giggly tonight?’ ‘Because there weren’t any pot noodles,’ etc.
Even if you’re not scoring on food, you want your guests to have a good time and be talking of your night for weeks to come. Dinner party games are a quick and fun way to ensure your night is a success!
